Visual Storytelling for Personal and Community Health in Your Library

Each individual has their personal health story to tell. They may tell it through words and/or imagery. In this session the presenter will discuss graphic medicine, which uses comics to tell health stories. The field of graphic medicine provides opportunities for librarian involvement at many levels. Collection development, health literacy, medical education, and promotion of resources for self-care and communication are some of the relevant areas where librarians participate in the use of comics in their communities.Graphic medicine is a powerful tool that helps promote communication in health conversations. The session will include examples of graphic medicine about mental and physical health, resources that the librarian can use in library programs, and hands-on activities for attendees.
